What is MPLS EVPN?

EVPN is next generation single control plane protocol, that will provide different flavours like ELINE, ELAN, ETREE, L3VPN interconnect. EVPN at the end of the day it just BGP. That is designed to advertise Mac addresses & IP Addresses back and forth.

EVPN must behave and do advertisements in certain ways in certain situations. Such that it does not create any problems. Such that it allows things like multi-pathing, fast failover and no loops. Very important concept & theories to prevent loops. Once again, it's just IBGP. But what it really comes down to are the packet types because there are many different advertisements within EVPN. And there are different route types very want to pay attention. So, buckle up this is going to be an interesting topic.


There are total 5 EVPN Route Types that you must know and those are.

1) Ethernet auto-discovery route

This route type is only applicable to multi homing cases and not for single homing. It if further divided into two sections. Ethernet AD/EVI & Ethernet AD/ES. Both serves different purpose based on the setup.



2) MAC/IP advertisement route

This is the dark horse of EVPN. Which carries the unicast traffic from point A to point B. You can also refer it as the backbone of EVPN who does the heavy lifting part.



3) Inclusive Multicast Route

Similar to MAC/IP Route, Inclusive Multicast Route carries the BUM traffic (Broadcast, Unknown Unicast & Multicast traffic. Between Nodes which are in same AS.



4) Ethernet Segment Route

The only purpose of this
